It has been almost two years since one of worst natural disasters hit south East Asia. The 2004 tsunami caused by the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake on 26th of December, 2004 shook Asia. People around the world joined to help the tsunami victims in Asia. Many organizations like UsAid and nations contributed to the relief fund. Bloggers in Asia joined together to raise funds to help victims. Tsunamihelp blog at blogspot was one of the notable blogs. Today as it is getting 2 years after the disaster struck, I just checked this blog to see what is going on. What I found was a tsunami of comment spam in this blog.
Look at this page here.
Why do people comment spam? Search engines like google rank websites in their search results depending upon various factors. One such factor is external links pointing towards a website. When your site gets a link from a trustworthy site, your website rank improves. Tsunamihelp blog is definitely a high quality site and a link from that site could improve the rank of spammer’s website. But what these spam creators did not notice is the “NOFOLLOW” tag attached to each of this link he posted. A nofollow tag means google is not going to give them any value for these links when they are ranking their site.
Acts like this not only make those webmasters look like spammers, but also like idiots. Come on guys, it is no longer 1999 to do comment spam and hope to improve your site ranking.
Update: Who runs the site mytravelsearch.info? The fellow spamed me with a comment boat on this exact thread. I promptly deleted. No wonder why some webmasters call the spammers as fu@king morons!
